The Southern Order of Chi Phi is founded by Thomas Capehart, Augustus Flythe, John Tucker, William H. Green, and James Cherry at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. (The chapter is now known as Alpha-Alpha.) The Southern Order had ambitious expansion plans, establishing Beta (Centenary College), Gamma (Davidson College), Epsilon (Western Military Institute), and Zeta (Cumberland University) Chapters, but they were interrupted by the Civil War.
