John E. Oliver was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 23, 1896, and died May 29, 1969. He attended the University of Georgia, where he was initiated into Eta Chapter. Oliver was a member of the United States Navy, enlisting in the Naval Aviation program in 1917 after graduating. He was sent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for training and was there when World War I ended.
Oliver served in several capacities on the Grand Council. He was Grand Delta from 1945 until 1947, and his service was an important pillar during the turbulent times of World War II. Following this, Oliver was elected Grand Alpha in 1959, a role he held until 1963. Oliver was also a member of the Atlanta, Georgia Alumni Chapter and chairman of the Chi Phi Educational Trust, where he had one of the longest tenures as a trustee, from 1948 until 1969.
Oliver’s constant dedication to Chi Phi did not go unnoticed. He was honored with the annual award for outstanding service. On his passing, former Grand Alpha William Jeckell remarked, “Chi Phi has lost its greatest friend and supporter…He spoke softly but his words were ones of wisdom.”
